# Beech leaf disease: the striped leaves, how far it has spread, and whether to plant beech now

> What the dark stripes on beech leaves mean, how far beech leaf disease has spread and what treatment can do for a yard tree, and whether to plant beech now.

Beech leaf disease is caused by a microscopic roundworm, the nematode *Litylenchus crenatae mccannii*, which winters in beech buds and damages the leaves before they open. Its mark is dark bands between the side veins, plainest from below against the sky, on leaves that turn thick, leathery and curled. The disease was first noticed in Lake County, Ohio, in 2012, and the nematode was named in 2020. Saplings can die within a few years, while big trees thin out more slowly. Repeated injections or sprays can hold it back in a single yard tree, but nothing yet works for a forest.

## What the stripes look like

The bands show as soon as the leaves open in spring, often first on saplings and low branches. Held up to the sky, a banded leaf looks opaque in stripes against the clearer tissue between them. Badly hit leaves are small, crinkled and cupped, with a thick, leathery feel instead of a papery one. Buds die, leaves drop early and the crown thins over the years.

Woolly beech aphids curl beech leaves and leave waxy threads on the underside, erineum mites raise harmless velvety patches, and anthracnose makes round brown spots ringed in yellow. None makes the dark bands.

## How fast an infected beech declines

Small saplings can die within a year or two, and trees of every size have died within two to seven years. Near where the disease began, Holden Arboretum researchers followed beech trees for more than a decade. Almost a third died, most of them understory trees and saplings, and the survivors grew more slowly. How long big canopy trees last is not yet known:

> "The long-term outlook for canopy trees remains uncertain, and we have not seen any trees recover from the disease once infested." (Holden Forests & Gardens, *Beech Leaf Disease*)

A beech can look better the spring after a dry fall, but that is a break from the nematodes and not a recovery.

## How far it has spread

By the Forest Service's count, beech leaf disease had been found in 16 states and Ontario by 2025. It covers the Northeast except a few counties in northern New England, and the newest finds lie to the west and south. Each first found it in the year shown:

| State or province | First found |
| --- | --- |
| Connecticut | 2019 |
| Delaware | 2023 |
| Maine | 2021 |
| Maryland | 2023 |
| Massachusetts | 2020 |
| Michigan | 2022 |
| New Hampshire | 2022 |
| New Jersey | 2020 |
| New York | 2018 |
| North Carolina | 2025 |
| Ohio | 2012 |
| Ontario | 2017 |
| Pennsylvania | By 2017 |
| Rhode Island | 2020 |
| Vermont | 2023 |
| Virginia | 2021 |
| West Virginia | 2020 |

How the nematode travels between forests is not settled. Rain and wind carry it at least 38 feet, aphids and caterpillars carry it alive, and birds may carry it farther. Nursery stock is suspected too, since a tree can harbor the nematode a year or two before its leaves show it.

## What you can do for a beech

Every treatment is still experimental, and three have shown results in single trees:

- **Thiabendazole injection.** A licensed applicator injects it at the root flare once the leaves are full grown. It has done best in trials, protects the next two to three years of leaves, and suits trees over 10 inches thick.
- **Fluopyram spray.** Sprayed on the leaves in late summer, as the nematodes move into the buds, it killed more than 90 percent of them in trials. It is a job for a professional.
- **Potassium phosphite drench.** This fertilizer is poured on the soil or sprayed on the lower trunk twice each summer. Soil drenches helped trees about 4 to 5 inches thick in Ohio trials, though not yet in Maine. It costs the least, and homeowners can buy some brands.

Cost and labor keep all of them to single trees:

> "In time, these treatments may become more economically feasible and could form the foundation for efficient nematode management. However, at present, they are not a viable solution for addressing BLD on a large scale." (Kantor, Demirel and Kantor, *Unveiling the threat of beech leaf disease: lessons from North America*, 2025)

For any beech, water in drought, keep mowers and traffic off its roots, leave its fallen leaves in place and keep mulch under 2 inches. Pruning to open the crown, in late August or in winter, lets the leaves dry and hinders the nematodes.

Do not cut down a beech that still looks healthy, since some trees resist the disease, but remove one whose decline makes it a hazard. Never move beech seedlings, soil or leaves out of an area where the disease is found. Report stripes in a new area to your state's forest health office.

## Beech bark disease, the older threat

A scale insect, *Cryptococcus fagisuga*, reached Nova Scotia from Europe around 1890. Its feeding lets a *Neonectria* fungus into the bark, where the fungus forms [cankers](https://bluewhaletrees.com/articles/glossary/index.html.md), kills the wood and blocks the sap. The first sign is white wool on the trunk and branches. Some infected trees break in heavy wind before they die, a condition called beech snap.

When the disease first sweeps through a forest, it can kill about half the big trees within ten years, the largest first. Root sprouts then fill the gaps with thickets of small beech, an aftermath forest in which the disease stays on. About 3 percent of beech trees resist it, and those are being used to breed resistant beech.

Bark disease attacks the trunk and the leaf disease only buds and leaves, so one tree can carry both.

## Should you plant a beech now

Where neither disease has reached, an [American beech](https://bluewhaletrees.com/plants/american-beech/index.html.md) on deep, moist, well-drained ground is still worth planting. It is the only tree of the northern hardwood forest that bears nuts, and it often lives 200 to 300 years. Blue Whale Trees grows its beech from seed, so no one can say whether a given sapling resists either disease.

Where beech leaf disease is present, plant a beech only among other kinds, such as the natives the [companion tool](https://bluewhaletrees.com/tools/companions/index.html.md?species=american-beech) lists for its ground. The disease has sickened only beech, so these trees do its jobs without the risk:

- [White oak](https://bluewhaletrees.com/plants/white-oak/index.html.md): a broad shade tree with sweet acorns that wildlife seek out. Zones 3 to 9, 50 to 80 feet.
- [Northern red oak](https://bluewhaletrees.com/plants/northern-red-oak/index.html.md): a fast oak whose acorns feed turkeys, bears and deer. Zones 3 to 8, 50 to 75 feet.
- [Shagbark hickory](https://bluewhaletrees.com/plants/shagbark-hickory/index.html.md): the sweetest wild nut in the eastern forest. Zones 4 to 8, 60 to 90 feet.
- [American hornbeam](https://bluewhaletrees.com/plants/american-hornbeam/index.html.md): also called blue beech, with smooth slate-gray bark, at home in shade. Zones 3 to 9, 20 to 35 feet.
- [Hop hornbeam](https://bluewhaletrees.com/plants/hop-hornbeam/index.html.md): it fills out in deep shade on dry, rocky soil. Zones 3 to 9, 25 to 40 feet.

## Common questions

### What are the dark stripes on my beech leaves?

Dark bands between the side veins are the mark of beech leaf disease, caused by a nematode that feeds in the buds over winter. Velvety patches or round brown spots mean mites or anthracnose instead.

### Can beech leaf disease be treated?

Every treatment is still experimental, but in trials thiabendazole injections and fluopyram sprays reduced it, and phosphite drenches helped small trees. Each must be repeated, and none is practical for a forest.

### How long does a beech live with beech leaf disease?

Small saplings can die within a year or two, and trees of every size have died within two to seven years. Big canopy trees decline more slowly, and none has been seen to recover.

### Is beech bark disease the same as beech leaf disease?

No: beech bark disease comes from a scale insect and a fungus in the trunk, while beech leaf disease comes from a nematode in the buds and leaves. One tree can have both.
