Native to where? The table below answers it for every plant in the catalog, A to Z, with the state codes a botanist would use. The first column of codes is the states with wild native populations on record, the last the states where the plant grows wild from planting. The [native-to-my-state tool](https://bluewhaletrees.com/tools/native/index.html.md) turns the same records around and lists the plants for one state.

## How to read the table

The states are the USDA PLANTS Database's records, which Blue Whale Trees reads for each plant by its symbol. A state in the native column holds wild populations the database marks native; a state in the introduced column holds wild populations that came from planting.

A state in neither column has no record of the plant growing wild, which is not the same as the plant failing there. Many of these plants grow well a zone or two beyond their range, and the plant page's zones say how far.

The codes are the two-letter postal codes, with DC for the District of Columbia. The count column gives how many states are in the native column.

### What each column means

- **slug**: the plant page's address, https://bluewhaletrees.com/plants/<slug>/
- **name**: the common name the page uses
- **botanical**: the botanical name
- **symbol**: the plant's symbol in the USDA PLANTS Database
- **native_states**: the two-letter codes of the states where the PLANTS Database records the plant growing wild as a native, separated by spaces; the District of Columbia counts as DC
- **native_count**: how many states are in native_states
- **introduced_states**: the codes of the states where PLANTS records it growing wild as an introduction
- **introduced_count**: how many states are in introduced_states

### How the table is made

The states are the USDA PLANTS Database's records for each plant, read for the native-to-my-state tool: native where PLANTS marks the plant native to the state, introduced where it marks it introduced. A state in neither column holds no record of the plant growing wild. The files are written from the records and checked at every release.

## Common questions

### Which native tree has the widest range?

Black locust is recorded native in 49 states, the most in the table. The narrowest ranges are a single state, which fifteen of our plants have.

### Is a plant native to my state?

Find the plant in the table and look for your state's code in the native column. The native-to-my-state tool gives the whole list for a state instead.

### What does introduced mean here?

The database marks a state introduced where the plant grows wild there from planting, not from its own range. Four of our plants have at least one such state.

### Why does a plant have no states at all?

One plants in the table have no state record, because the database holds no wild population for them, as with a plant known only from cultivation.
