Chinquapin is the chestnut's shrubby cousin, native to dry ridges and sandy woods from Pennsylvania to Texas. It is affected by chestnut blight but resprouts freely and keeps bearing, producing sweet single nuts in prickly burs by its third or fourth year. Perfect for a wildlife hedge or a small-scale nut planting.
