Rare Trees & Shrubs

Native trees and shrubs that are uncommon in the wild or in nurseries, grown from seed.

We grow 144 trees and shrubs that are uncommon in the wild or in nurseries. Of these, eighty-two are shrubs, among them Cumberland rosemary, box huckleberry and dwarf chinquapin oak. The trees run from Florida torreya and Fraser fir to Kentucky coffeetree and blue ash. Why native trees become rare explains what makes a species scarce, with ten rare eastern species worth growing.
