Pecans from Iowa, Illinois and Missouri river bottoms mature nuts in seasons too short for southern varieties. The nuts are smaller but sweeter. A pecan wants deep, moist, fertile soil and a lot of space, and it repays that with a massive, long-lived tree and a nut crop for the grandchildren. Plant two for pollination.
