Every tree and shrub we grow at a glance: size, zones, sun, soil, bloom, fruit and first crop

One row for each of the 414 trees and shrubs we grow: mature height and spread, hardiness zones, sun and soil, bloom and fruit months and years to a first crop.

On this page How to read the tableTrees and shrubs, A to ZThe table as a fileCommon questionsSources

How big does it get, where will it grow, and when does it flower? The table below answers those questions for every plant in the catalog, A to Z, from the facts each plant page prints. A name opens the page, where the facts sit with their sources, the growing guide and the photographs.

How to read the table

The figures are the ones Blue Whale Trees gives on each plant’s page, and nothing here is new. The size cell gives the form, the mature height and crown width of one plant in feet, and the coldest and warmest hardiness zones.

Sun and soil list every exposure and soil moisture the plant takes. Bloom and fruit give the months across the plant’s native range, with what ripens; a southern plant runs earlier in the far South and later in the North.

The first crop is the years from planting to the first fruit or seed, as the facts row states it, with a qualifier where the page gives one. To find a plant by one of these facts, the tree finder filters the same facts, and the growth rate table adds how fast each one grows.

Trees and shrubs, A to Z

The table holds the 199 trees and 215 shrubs we grow. A name opens the plant’s page.

How the table is made

Every column is the plant page’s own fact, read from the data files the pages are drawn from. The months are the calendar’s, the first crop the pollination planner’s and the spread the facts row’s, each from the sources the page names. The files are written from the records and checked at every release.

Common questions

How tall do native trees and shrubs get?

The trees in the table mature at anything up to 125 feet, and the shrubs from 1 feet to 30. Each row gives the page’s range, low end to high end.

How long does a seed-grown tree take to bear?

The quickest in the table bear in their first year and the slowest take about 40. Most shrubs bear within a few years of planting, and most oaks and hickories take twenty years or more.

Which zone am I in?

The zone tool gives the hardiness zone for a ZIP code. A plant suits a yard when that zone falls inside the range in its row, which runs from zone 2 to zone 10 across the table.

Where do the facts come from?

Each plant page lists its sources, from the Woody Plant Seed Manual to state floras and extension pages. The table repeats the page’s figures and adds nothing.
