The ground each tree and shrub we grow belongs to: habitats, A to Z

By · Published · 22 min read

The wild habitats each of our 414 trees and shrubs grows in, from floodplain forests to dry uplands, which the companion tool reads to match the plants.

On this page How to read the tableHabitats, A to ZThe table as a fileCommon questionsSources

Plants that share a habitat in the wild share a yard well. The table below gives the ground every plant in the catalog grows on, A to Z, from floodplain forests and swamps to dry uplands, sandy barrens and the forest understory. It is what the companion tool reads when it lists what to plant with what, and a name opens the plant’s page.

How to read the table

The habitats are the ones Blue Whale Trees reads from each plant page’s range and site facts, in eleven classes. They are floodplain forests, swamps and wet flats, stream banks, rich moist slopes, dry uplands, sandy barrens, rocky ground, old fields and edges, the forest understory, the Appalachians, the coast. A plant can belong to several, and most do.

The last column marks the plants on the Morton Arboretum’s list of those black walnut’s juglone harms, by species or by genus. The companion tool keeps them away from black walnut.

Habitats, A to Z

The table holds the 414 trees and shrubs we grow. The commonest class is stream banks, with 199 plants, and the rarest the coast, with 50.

The table as a file

Download the table as CSV or JSON: 414 rows, one for one tree or shrub the nursery grows, with the columns below. The figures are published under the Creative Commons Attribution 4.0 licence: use them with a credit to bluewhaletrees.com and a link to this page. Updated 2026-10-22.

What each column means

  • slug: the plant page’s address, https://bluewhaletrees.com/plants//
  • name: the common name the page uses
  • botanical: the botanical name
  • habitats: the habitat codes the plant grows in, separated by semicolons: bottomland, swamp, streambank, mesic-slope, upland-dry, sandy, rocky, old-field, understory, mountain, coastal
  • habitat_words: the same habitats in words, as the companion tool names them
  • juglone_source: true for a plant whose roots release juglone, which black walnut’s do
  • juglone_sensitive: true where the plant is on the Morton Arboretum’s list of plants juglone harms, by species or by genus

How the table is made

The habitats are read from each plant page’s range and site facts, and the companion tool matches plants that share them. The juglone columns follow the Morton Arboretum’s list of plants black walnut harms. The files are written from the records and checked at every release.

Common questions

What grows well with what?

Plants from the same habitat: a swamp tree with swamp shrubs, a dry upland oak with the sandy-ground plants. The companion tool lists the matches for any plant we grow.

Which plants cannot grow near a black walnut?

Forty-five of our plants are on the Morton Arboretum’s list of plants juglone harms, among them the crabapples, hackberries, basswoods, blueberries and rhododendrons. The table’s last column marks each one.

Does a habitat class mean the plant needs that ground?

No; it says where the plant grows wild. Most of these plants take an ordinary garden soil, and the plant page’s sun and soil lines say what each needs.

Tool

What grows with it?

Pick one tree and see the natives that share its ground in the wild and the ones that pair with it in a yard.
