What each tree and shrub we grow is also called: other names, A to Z

By · Published · 22 min read

Other common names of the 414 trees and shrubs we grow, regional names and old trade names, with the botanical name, so a tree known by another name is found.

On this page How to read the tableOther names, A to ZThe table as a fileCommon questionsSources

One tree, many names: a swamp chestnut oak is a basket oak or a cow oak depending on where you grew up, and a serviceberry is a shadbush, a juneberry or a sarvis. The table below lists the other names of every plant in the catalog, A to Z, with the botanical name that settles which plant is meant. A name in the first column opens the plant’s page.

How to read the table

The other names are the ones Blue Whale Trees prints under each plant’s title, gathered from its sources. They are regional names, old trade names and the names of a parent species where the plant is a variety, and the botanical name is the one the page uses.

397 of the 414 plants carry at least one other name, and labrador tea the most. A plant with an empty cell is known by its one name alone.

The table as a file

Download the table as CSV or JSON: 414 rows, one for one tree or shrub the nursery grows, with the columns below. The figures are published under the Creative Commons Attribution 4.0 licence: use them with a credit to bluewhaletrees.com and a link to this page. Updated 2026-10-22.

What each column means

  • slug: the plant page’s address, https://bluewhaletrees.com/plants//
  • name: the common name the page uses
  • botanical: the botanical name
  • other_names: the other common names the plant page lists, separated by commas; empty where the page lists none

How the table is made

The names are the ones each plant page prints under its title, gathered from its sources. The files are written from the records and checked at every release.

Common questions

How do I know which tree a name means?

By the botanical name: two plants can share a common name, but each has one botanical name. Find the common name in the table and read the middle column.

Why does one tree have so many names?

Names grew up region by region, trade by trade and use by use, before botanical names settled them. A tree used for baskets, fence posts and fodder picked up a name from each.

Can I search the shop by another name?

Yes: the shop’s search box and the plant boxes in the tools know these names, so typing a regional name finds the plant under the name the page uses.
